Race Week Strategy: Tapering, Nervous System Readiness and Mental Edge

It's Not Just About Doing Less

The goal isn't to rest until you feel fresh. It's to arrive physically and mentally ready. There's a real difference between rested and ready. A well-managed taper can support this balance.

"I always tell runners the same thing before a big event: trust the work you've put in. Race week is about honouring that preparation, not second-guessing it." - Dr Ian Northeast, [Chiropractor]

Tapering Done Well

Tapering reduces accumulated fatigue while helping maintain coordination and movement patterns. Two common mistakes may affect this balance: doing too little (flat legs, stiffness, that dreaded sluggish feeling) or doing too much and carrying fatigue into race day. The goal is maintenance, not accumulation. Short, sharp efforts. Quality over quantity.

Nervous System Readiness

Your nervous system drives coordination, timing, and muscle activation. When it's primed, movement feels light and responsive. When it's not, movement may feel less responsive and it may feel more challenging to maintain pace. Short race-pace efforts and light mobility work during taper keep it switched on without adding unnecessary load.

Managing Pre-Race Tension

Some pre-race tension is completely normal. The problem comes when physical tightness accumulates on top of mental tension, making it hard to move freely and breathe well. Slow breathing, a consistent wind-down routine, and sticking to familiar habits in the final days may help support this balance.

Sleep in the Final 72 Hours

The night before a race is often the worst sleep a runner gets. That's fine. One poor night is unlikely to have a significant impact for most runners. What matters more is sleep quality in the two to three nights prior. Prioritise those, and race-eve restlessness becomes much less of a concern.

Residual tightness through the hips, lower back, or thoracic spine may influence how freely you move in those early kilometres. Tamar Chiro offers pre-race assessments to help you better understand how your body is moving. Prepare with more clarity before race day.
