New Waterfront Finish for Australia's Fastest Course

March 20, 2026

Australia's fastest course just got faster.

The McGrath Launceston Running Festival presented by Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium will unveil an exciting new start and finish line precinct in 2026, with the finish line moving to an untapped waterfront location on Kings Wharf Road alongside the Tamar River.

The changes will deliver a faster, more scenic course for runners and a vibrant new spectator experience, further enhancing the event’s reputation as Australia’s fastest road running course.

Race Director Richard Welsh said the new finish line precinct marks a significant evolution for the event.

“Moving the finish line to Kings Wharf Road next to the Tamar River gives the event a beautiful new focal point.”

“It’s more picturesque for runners and spectators, and it also allows us to refine the course so it’s even faster than before.”

“This change is something we’ve been working towards since 2020.  After last year’s growth of 68%, we certainly now justify the additional real estate on event weekend.  We’re grateful to the landowners Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Services, City of Launceston, Peppers Silo and Marine Ship Lift for their support,” Welsh said.

The updated course design brings several key improvements, including tightening outlying turns to create a more direct route and removing the infamous hook turn that previously appeared in the final 400 metres of the race.

“These adjustments mean athletes will be able to maintain momentum deep into the race, which was particularly key in the men’s event last year as 4 men sprinted the final kilometre,” Welsh said.

“Australia’s fastest course will now be even faster,” Welsh declared.

The McGrath Launceston Running Festival continues to attract global attention, with the 2026 event once again awarded a World Athletics Elite Label — the only event in the Southern Hemisphere to hold that status.

Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Jane Howlett, said the festival continues to strengthen its reputation as a world-class sporting event.

“The McGrath Launceston Running Festival is a standout event on Tasmania’s calendar, attracting elite athletes and recreational runners from around the world,” Minister Howlett said.

“The new waterfront finish line will create an incredible atmosphere for competitors and spectators alike while showcasing Launceston and the Tamar River to a global audience.”

The festival will take place on Sunday 31 May 2026, featuring four events catering to elite and recreational runners alike:

  • Peppers Silo Half Marathon
  • Tamar Chiro 10km
  • The Athlete’s Foot 5km
  • Liv Eat Mile
