The McGrath Launceston Running Festival is set to make history on Sunday 1 June, becoming the first and only half marathon event in the Southern Hemisphere to be awarded a World Athletics Elite Label — a global recognition placing Tasmania firmly on the international running map.
This prestigious label is reserved for road races that meet the highest standards of competition, course quality, athlete participation, and global exposure — placing Launceston alongside the world’s premier running events.
Now the Southern Hemisphere’s top-ranked half marathon, the McGrath Launceston Running Festival will attract elite athletes from across the globe, alongside thousands of everyday runners keen to experience the fast, scenic course and world-class atmosphere.
Race Director Richard Welsh said the achievement is a milestone for the Tasmanian sporting community.
“This is the biggest announcement that’s ever occurred for road running in Tasmania. With the Peppers Silo Half Marathon now a World Athletics Elite Label race, the only event in Australia with a higher status level than us, is the Sydney Marathon.
“Recreational running has never been more popular, now thanks to the confidence given to us from our partners we are all investing to grow the event.
“The benefits to the participants are numerous. The event overall will increase in quality, with athlete services, infrastructure, on course entertainment, atmosphere and participant value for money increasing significantly. Of course our elite field will be extraordinary, with support for the world best athletes being a major part of the status increase,” Welsh said.
Welsh also reiterated that it put Launceston one step closer to it’s ultimate goal.
“We firmly believe Launceston is an ideal city for the World Athletics Road Running Championships in a year in the lead up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. This is exactly the trajectory we need to be on and having all industry, government and commercial partners aligned is really important,” Welsh added.
The festival features four distances catering to all abilities:
This year’s festival promises to be the biggest yet, with locals and visitors alike joining in to celebrate community spirit, elite competition, and Launceston’s vibrant regional charm.
Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan said through the Tasmanian Festival and Event Support Fund, the Launceston Running Festival is being with $400,000 for the next two years.
"This funding means the Launceston Running Festival will host the first, and only, half marathon event in the Southern Hemisphere to be awarded a World Athletics Elite Label," Minister Duigan said.
"This is an incredible opportunity for Launceston and will assist with attracting elite athletes from across the globe to the city.
"Our Government recognises our winter economy is crucial. Our off season must be filled with engaging events enticing visitors to stay and travel within our beautiful state.
"I look forward to seeing the hard-working team deliver a high-quality experience to the participants and their family and friends."
